Not all outdoor fabrics are created equal. Here's exactly how our outdoor system protects the comfort you specify—and which level of protection fits each space.
The quick distinction
Waterproof vs. Water-resistant
Waterproof: Built for the elements. It means absolute, uncompromised protection. Even under prolonged, heavy pouring rain, cannot soak through. The seat remains completely dry.
Water-resistant: Built for life's daily accidents and light weather. It repels liquid on contact, giving you plenty of time to wipe away spilled coffee, juice, or a splash from the pool. It easily handles morning dew and light mist.
The sofa architecture
To bring the genuine comfort of an indoor sofa outside, we had to rethink fabric engineering. A single, stiff bonded fabric feels like plastic—which ruins the lounge experience.
Instead, our outdoor sofas utilise a sophisticated, two-separate-layer system that separates aesthetic comfort from heavy-duty protection.
Our two-layer system
- The Outer Layer
This is what you see and feel. It delivers high-end design, UV resistance, and excellent water resistance. It easily repels daily spills and passing showers. - The Inner Layer (The vetsak Membrane)
Engineered directly underneath the outer cover, the Membrane is a dedicated, fully waterproof protective shield. During heavy or prolonged rainfall, moisture may eventually pass through the weave of the outer fabric. The moment it does, it hits the Membrane. This absolute barrier stops water dead in its tracks, keeping the internal cloud-like foam completely dry and preventing any mold or core damage.
What to specify where
- Our Sofas: 100% Waterproof
Built to live outside permanently—terraces, rooftops, courtyards, poolside. No covers to manage, no seasonal storage, no weather-watching for your client. The outer fabric dries quickly, and the interior stays flawlessly protected thanks to the Membrane.
- Our Beanbags & Accessories: Water-Resistant
Perfect for poolside lounging, open-air decks, and active zones. Spills and light drizzle are no issue. For heavy downpours or over winter, advise clients to bring them under a roof or use a standard cover to keep them fresh.
No complex tools, no frustration. A quick guide to assembling the outdoor sofa and securing its protective layer (the Membrane)—useful for on-site installs and client handovers.
Beyond waterproof
True weather resistance
To ensure the sofa you specify looks as pristine in three years as it does on day one, we look at international testing differently. There is a fundamental difference between simply surviving the sun and surviving the elements.
The indoor benchmark
Sun protection
The Test (ISO 105-B02): Fabric is exposed to intense UV light behind glass to simulate a sunny living room. While this is an excellent quality indicator for indoor or sunroom spaces, it does not account for real-world outdoor conditions.
The vetsak outdoor standard
Engineered for the elements
The Test (ISO 105-B04): This is the definitive outdoor test. The fabric is subjected to a demanding, recurring cycle of both intense UV light and constant water sprays. It simulates harsh rainstorms, high humidity, and rapid temperature shifts. Only fabrics that maintain their structural strength and colour integrity under these conditions make it onto our sofas.
The scorecard
We test our premium outdoor fabrics against the highest international outdoor standard (ISO 105-B04) on a strict scale of 1 to 5. Here is how the lineup performs:
- Ridge: 5 / 5 — Flawless. Maximum possible resistance against intense UV exposure and heavy rain.
- Terrain: 4–5 / 5 — Exceptional durability, engineered to maintain its rich aesthetic through extreme seasons.
- Pique: 4–5 / 5 — High-performance resilience paired with a refined, tactile texture.
The takeaway
The piece you specify in year one is the piece your client is still proud of in year three. Dry on the inside thanks to the Membrane; premium look, rich colour, and structural integrity on the outside. No fading, no weathering, no call-backs.
